15 - Minutes Home Improvements

Monday, March 30th, 2015 by Danny Peterson

Spring is here and we all crave for a new beginning. Why not start with your own home? Besides the typical extensive cleaning, your living space might benefit from some renovating. You can make quick and easy home repairs with a huge impact in only fifteen minutes. Lack of time is not a legit excuse anymore so let’s get to work!

Impressive entry

Make a really noticeable change by replacing your old front door or by simply repainting it. Believe it or not, this insufficient update can dramatically change the exterior of your home. And we all know that first impression matters.

Slamming doors and Squeaky Hinge

While on the door topic, maybe it’s time to take care of the dreadful squeaky hinge.  You can treat it with an aerosol lubricating oil or you can spray a little WD – 40. Another option is to rub the hinge with petroleum jelly. As for the slamming doors, you can use a few pieces of peel – and –stick foam sheets. You can also use wide rubber brand and wrap it around the doorknobs. Be careful to not cover the latch.

Update the hardware

Buying new appliances can be quite expensive. Try this trick! Replace the cabinet hardware.  It’s cheap and easy solution.  Look for knobs and pulls with appropriate size. If your cabinets ask for more than simply a new hardware, give them a fresh layer of paint. Cleaning them beforehand is a must.

Peeling wallpaper

Just as any other home, your living space is a subject to wear and tear process. You cannot stop it, but you can fix what you can. Peeling wallpaper can be repaired with a piece of writing paper, smear wallpaper paste and a knife. Attach the paper against the loose wallpaper section and then press it. Smooth the area with clean cloth or sponge.

Squeaky floor

You don’t need to be a professional to deal with it. Get rid of the annoying noise by sprinkling talcum powder over the problematic area and in the cracks. Keep in mind that this is only a temporary solution.

 Sliding windows

All you need is a silicone spray lubricant. The product will grease the skids.  Apply it onto a rag and then go over the tracks. It doesn’t matter if they are metal, plastic or wooden.  Then you can proceed with the window cleaning.

Take care of the scratches

Laminate – you can never remove completely the scratches, but you can make them less visible by rubbing them with vegetable oil. Wood – the nicks and scratches don’t stand a chance to these powerful products. If you damaged your wooden furniture, just rub a walnut over the damaged area. The food is rich of natural oils that will “heal” the scratch. Shoe polish in the same colour as your furniture will also do the job. For the wooden cutting board, you can use salt and a half a lemon. It will make it brand new. Granite – Fill the damaged spot with epoxy resin in the matching colour. Be sure that the area is clean before attempting any repairs.
