A new roof is a big investment, typically involving thousands of your hard-earned dollars. As with any big investment, knowing what to expect in advance is very important.
Let me begin this segment by saying that a warranty on your roofing work is extremely important, and you should only work with a roofing contractor who has the ability to offer a comprehensive warranty. Basically, there are two types of coverage that you should ask your contractor about: coverage against manufacturing defects in the materials, and coverage against workmanship errors.
As far as I know, all manufacturers provide a warranty against manufacturing defects in their roofing products. However, your exact coverage will vary depending on the brand, so, be sure to check with your roofing contractor about what the specific terms are.
Next, realize that many roofing companies do provide their own warranty against errors in workmanship, sometimes for as long as 10 years or more. Unfortunately, that coverage is only good for as long as the contractor remains in business. Since roofing is a “high-turnover” business, you will want to make sure that you work with a company that has withstood the test of time, and has a solid business history to ensure this part of your warranty stays in effect.
