Get to Know Your Vertical Siding Options

Friday, January 31st, 2014 by Danny Peterson

When improving the curb appeal of your home, you may consider updating your siding; but have you considered all of your vertical siding options? Baltimore residents can see that horizontal siding is fairly common, but vertical siding is great for creating a more traditional look—especially when you opt for board and batten. Get to know all of your choices to create a look that makes your home stand out from the rest and look fantastic.

Board and Batten. This is a classic approach to siding that refers to wood boards, usually 8” by 12’ in size, vertically attached onto a house’s subsiding. Every board is butt-joined, and the joint is then covered with a strip of wood, known as batten. The batten is usually about 3”- 4” wide. The final look will be reminiscent of a cabin, or other rustic homes.

T-111. This refers to a “textured” plywood panel, developed to replicate the look of board and batten. T-111 comes in sheets about four feet by eight feet. Thanks to its sheer nature, it can be attached directly to studs, and uses house wrap between each. It typically comes pre-primed, so as soon as they are installed, you can paint them to your desired color. Many homeowners take this route because T-111 is relatively inexpensive to produce, and it is simple and fast to install. It has become more popular than genuine board and batten in many situations.

Fiber cement sidingThese are concrete composite panels, which are sometimes used to replicate the look of board and batten. Fiber cement can also come in horizontal siding and lap siding. However, this vertical variety typically comes in four foot by eight-foot panels and is ready to paint once it is installed. It is also typically more durable than wood composite or true wood products.

Vinyl or aluminum. Similar to board and batten, vinyl and aluminum vertical siding can give the same traditional look to your home. Vinyl siding is designed to look like wood grain. However, it does not require much maintenance, other than hosing it down on occasion. It also comes in a wide variety of colors. However, they tend to be brighter shades to help reflect light and not fade. For the most part, vinyl has replaced aluminum. For modern homeowners, the value and durability of vinyl is the best on the market. Both vinyl and aluminum siding follow similar procedures when installing, and are typically grouped together (even now) when discussing instructions.

Many experts and companies suggest that these varieties are simple enough to install that virtually any homeowner can do it on their own. However, remember that any variety of siding will still have a relatively complex installation process, and it is easier to forget a step or make a mistake than some salesmen would let on. Thus, it’s usually best to let professionals handle the installation after you take the lead on choosing your material, color, and style.

How durable is vertical siding?

Each of your vertical siding options will have different levels of durability. This will depend entirely on the material you choose to use. While fiber cement might be pricier than other options, it will have the best level of durability. It is even generally covered under a warranty for up to 50 years.

How much maintenance does vertical siding require?

When learning your vertical siding options, it’s important to take the level of maintenance into consideration. Like durability, maintenance is determined by the material you choose to install. Wood and wood composite siding need routine sealing, staining, or painting. Fiber cement will need repainting on occasion, too. Get to know each material—and all of your vertical siding options—better by discussing them with your contractor, as they can advise in great detail on the pros and cons of each choice available to you.

Recently we hired Integrity Pro to design and complete a combination bathroom and Laundry room in our basement. We knew for quite sometime this would be a big time consuming job. We actually interview at least 6 other construction companies. We found out that a lot of plumbers were not interested in the construction aspects of this type of work. We found out that anyone offering to do this for 7-8 thousand dollars was not trustworthy.More than once we were ready to pull the trigger only to walk back from the ledge for different reasons. The first thing that stood out on the Integrity estimate was that big fat liability policy that was part of the estimate proposal. As a retired Casualty Insurance Professional this was definitely a determining factor. The other was the fixture allowance. But it did take 2-3 conversations to lead to the big hand shake. Then the next “feel good” factor was Alberto the lead carpenter. He came in on a Saturday after the plumber because he needed to get a jump on things. He worked every Saturday until finished. We saw Mike the Project Manager like 4 times. Very reassuring. The door to the laundry room needed some creative thinking. Once again great results. For us this was a once in a life time project, we had much to loose if done incorrectly, but much to gain when done right. That is where we are, on the plus side. Well done.Anthony Bynum

This company is very responsive. Not only did Danny (owner) listen to our concerns, but he heard our concerns. Many days, I was leaving as the workers arrived. Danny would leave post it notes to ensure the contractors addressed any concerns from the day before. The contractors are very respectful of our home. They cleaned up every afternoon so as not to leave our house in disarray. My fireplace turned out beautifully. My bathroom doors were moved and the new locking barn darns turned out beautifully. Danny is having a custom threshold designed to make the transition between too rooms seamless. Danny took a load barring wall down to open up the kitchen and the back room. Danny ensured the openings to these rooms were at least 36 inches. Ensuring the house is ADA accessible was very important to me.

Our project coordinator on site was Alberto. He was so fastidious, and was so committed to making the job look fantastic at the end. He even came back after he realized he forgot to put some thing on our final cabinet installation even thought he was in his truck, on his way out. He was just so excellent and we can’t have asked for a better project result.

I’m so happy to have found Integrity Home Pro! After working with multiple contractors on various house projects, Integrity Home Pro has been a breath of fresh air. They’re professional, courteous, knowledgeable, reliable, show up when they say they’re going to, and are quick to respond to phone calls and emails. Not only that, their work is excellent. We hired them to renovate a bathroom and were so impressed we hired them to renovate our sunroom and kitchen and make various improvements around the outside of our home. I cannot recommend them highly enough and will work with them again for any future home improvements.

My wife and I reached out to Integrity Home Pro for a quote to repair/replace wood under our bay windows that started rotting years ago. Within a few days, we had an estimate with several different options, and reasonable price set for the work done, as well as an estimate for how long the work would take.Within 3 weeks, Integrity Home Pro sent out their team to replace our rotted wood with panels and had finished the work within the time originally estimated. We're so happy with the work they've done, that we will certainly be reaching out again for more work on our home.Long and short: Integrity Home Pro has shown us professional courtesy, impressive workmanship, and genuine care for our needs. The quality of service is a rarity, and we plan on reaching out to Integrity again in the near future.Photos provided to show the before and after

Integrity Home Pro was a pleasure to work with. I had extensive hail damage to my house and the process of getting information to my insurance and approval for a full replacement was a long process. Ben at Integrity was very patient and extremely helpful every step of the way. He assisted with everything the insurance needed so that now I have a new roof and siding. The installers were outstanding and when they were finished you could not see any debris on the lawn or damage to any bushes. I used Integrity about 10 years ago for the previous roof that the hail damaged ( I thought they were terrific then) and I think they only have improved with time. I highly recommend them!

Integrity Home Pro were very pleasant and easy to work with when our roof was damaged by a tree branch. They replaced my roof quickly in the morning. Also, I am a returning customer knowing they did a great job replacing my roof 20 years ago.

Integrity Home-Pro just completed remolding our kitchen. The process took two weeks. Elmer Lopez did the work. He worked non-stop everyday; his workmanship is premium. Tera Ingwersen guided us through the process from the office on a regular basis and was always available to answer questions. Integrity's quote for the work was significantly less than a quote given by another company. Integrity's owner, Danny Peterson, personally came when we called about getting a quote. He followed up on two occasions as the work was being done. Integrity Home Pro has done other major projects on our home and we have been pleased each time.
