Why Choose Shiplap For Your Columbia Home?

Shiplap siding is an increasingly popular choice for homes in Columbia, MD, offering a blend of aesthetic appeal and functional benefits.

Its ability to create a tight seal while allowing the wood to breathe adapts well to Columbia’s varied climate. This feature ensures durability and longevity.

Additionally, the unique “nickel gap” design of shiplap not only provides weatherproofing but also adds a distinct aesthetic charm, making it suitable for various architectural styles found in Columbia’s neighborhoods.

Tailoring shiplap to the local aesthetic involves choosing materials and finishes that complement Columbia’s diverse architectural landscape, from historic homes in Wilde Lake to modern builds in Kings Contrivance.

The Historical Background Of Shiplap

Shiplap has a rich history, tracing its origins back to shipbuilding.

This practical solution in maritime construction involved overlapping wooden planks, a technique that provided strength and water resistance to a ship. Over time, this method transitioned from ships to architectural applications, becoming a popular siding choice for barns, sheds, and homes.

The evolution of shiplap from a shipbuilding staple to a stylish home design element is a testament to its durability and adaptability. In Columbia, MD, this translates to shiplap siding being not just a trendy choice but a nod to a time-tested method of construction that withstands the test of time and elements.

Material Choices For Shiplap Siding

Fiber Cement

Pros:

  • Durability: Highly resistant to pests like termites, fire, and harsh weather, making it ideal for Columbia’s varied environment.
  • Low Maintenance: Requires minimal upkeep compared to wood siding.

Cons:

  • Cost: Generally, it is more expensive upfront than wood.
  • Installation: Heavier and more challenging to install, often requiring professional assistance.

Wood

Pros:

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Real wood, including cedar, spruce, pine, and southern yellow pine, offers a natural, rustic charm.
  • Durability: Cedar is particularly resistant to rot and decay, making it a long-lasting option.
  • Environment Suitability: Well-suited for Columbia’s climate, with natural resistance to weather changes.

Cons:

  • Cost: Generally, it’s more expensive than synthetic options.
  • Maintenance: Requires regular upkeep, like staining or sealing, to maintain its appearance.

Metal (Aluminum)

Pros:

  • Modern Look: Provides a sleek, contemporary finish.
  • Low Maintenance: Resistant to rot and decay, requiring less upkeep than wood.

Cons:

  • Cost: It can be more expensive than some wood options.
  • Aesthetic Limitations: It may not blend well with traditional architectural styles prevalent in some Columbia neighborhoods.

Shiplap In Exterior & Interior Design

In Columbia, MD, shiplap siding is not just a decorative choice for interior spaces but a functional and aesthetic option for exterior home design. Its ability to withstand varying weather conditions makes it suitable for Columbia’s climate, ensuring that homes in neighborhoods like Kings Contrivance retain their beauty and integrity over time.

Exterior Design

Shiplap’s exterior applications are diverse, from enhancing the curb appeal of historic homes to complementing the sleek lines of modern architecture.

Its versatility allows homeowners to create unique patterns and designs, such as horizontal or vertical installations, that reflect their personal style while adding value to their property.

The adaptability of shiplap to different finishes, from natural stains to bold paints, offers endless possibilities for transforming the exterior look of homes across Columbia.

Interior Design

Interior designers in Columbia are increasingly using shiplap to create accent walls, fireplace surrounds, and even ceiling treatments, embracing its ability to add depth and warmth to living spaces.

Whether painted, stained, or left in its natural state, shiplap siding adapts to various design aesthetics, from the historic charm of Columbia’s Wilde Lake area to the modern architecture of Downtown Columbia.

Short Installation Guide

Installing shiplap siding in Columbia, MD, can be a rewarding DIY project or a task for professional installers, depending on the complexity and scale. The process typically involves:

  1. Preparation: Start by removing any existing siding and ensuring the wall is flat and level.
  2. Installation:
    • Boards are secured to the walls using nails, fasteners, or screws.
    • Beveled edges are cut into the interlocking ends for a tight seal.
    • Stagger the joints if the boards do not span the width of the wall.
  3. Finishing Touches:
    • Caulk can be applied to cover any gaps between boards for a cleaner finish.

While DIY installation is feasible, especially for smaller projects or experienced homeowners, professional installation is recommended for larger or more complex projects to ensure the best results.

Maintenance And Upkeep Of Shiplap

Shiplap siding in Columbia, especially in neighborhoods like River Hill, requires regular maintenance to retain its aesthetic appeal and longevity:

  1. Regular Inspections: Check for signs of rot, paint deterioration, or moisture damage.
  2. Cleaning: Use a soft brush and mild soap to clean the exterior, preventing dirt buildup and mold growth within the gaps.
  3. Repainting/Staining: Every few years, repainting or staining is recommended to protect the shiplap from the elements and maintain its appearance.

Proper care and maintenance will ensure that your shiplap siding remains a beautiful and durable addition to your Columbia home for many years.

Comparing Shiplap With Other Popular Siding Types

In Columbia, MD, homeowners have various siding options, each offering distinct characteristics. Here’s how shiplap siding compares with other popular types:

Clapboard Siding: Known for its overlapping horizontal planks, clapboard offers a traditional look. Shiplap, with its tighter seal and distinct “nickel gap,” provides a similar aesthetic but with a unique charm and better weather resistance.

Board and Batten Siding: This type features alternating wide boards and narrow wooden strips (battens) for a dimensional effect. Shiplap, on the other hand, offers a more uniform and streamlined appearance, suitable for both traditional and modern homes in areas like Dorsey’s Search.

Shingle Siding: Often made from wood or fiber cement, shingle siding gives a textured, layered look. Shiplap provides a cleaner, more uniform appearance, making it a preferred choice for homeowners seeking a balance of tradition and modernity.

Vertical Panel Siding: This style runs vertically, creating an illusion of height. Shiplap typically runs horizontally but can be installed vertically for a similar effect with the added benefit of its characteristic groove design.

Shiplap stands out for its versatility, ease of installation, and ability to fit various architectural styles in Columbia.

It strikes a balance between aesthetic appeal and practical functionality, making it a popular choice for homeowners looking to enhance their property’s value and curb appeal.

Shiplap’s Place In Modern Home Design Trends

Shiplap has transcended beyond its traditional applications to become a staple in modern home design trends.

In Columbia, MD, shiplap is not just a feature for historic homes but is also embraced in contemporary designs, offering a blend of the traditional with sharp, modern lines. This versatility allows it to fit various spaces and styles, including modern, contemporary, and industrial designs.

Color and Finish Variations: Shiplap’s adaptability extends to its finishes, from classic white, which gives the feel of an ocean-side cottage, to dark colors like black or gray for a contemporary look. Charred and driftwood finishes offer additional creative options.

Application Diversity: Shiplap can be painted, stained, or left natural. Its orderly lines add rhythm to walls, and it can be used in diverse ways – on fireplaces, as kitchen hoods, or even on ceilings, offering a creative alternative to traditional drywall ceilings.

Shiplap’s resurgence in popularity, particularly in the last decade, can be attributed to its ability to add unique visual interest to both interior and exterior spaces.

In neighborhoods like Hickory Ridge, shiplap is used to add character and modernity to homes, reflecting a blend of traditional values and contemporary aesthetics.

Recently we hired Integrity Pro to design and complete a combination bathroom and Laundry room in our basement. We knew for quite sometime this would be a big time consuming job. We actually interview at least 6 other construction companies. We found out that a lot of plumbers were not interested in the construction aspects of this type of work. We found out that anyone offering to do this for 7-8 thousand dollars was not trustworthy.More than once we were ready to pull the trigger only to walk back from the ledge for different reasons. The first thing that stood out on the Integrity estimate was that big fat liability policy that was part of the estimate proposal. As a retired Casualty Insurance Professional this was definitely a determining factor. The other was the fixture allowance. But it did take 2-3 conversations to lead to the big hand shake. Then the next “feel good” factor was Alberto the lead carpenter. He came in on a Saturday after the plumber because he needed to get a jump on things. He worked every Saturday until finished. We saw Mike the Project Manager like 4 times. Very reassuring. The door to the laundry room needed some creative thinking. Once again great results. For us this was a once in a life time project, we had much to loose if done incorrectly, but much to gain when done right. That is where we are, on the plus side. Well done.Anthony Bynum

This company is very responsive. Not only did Danny (owner) listen to our concerns, but he heard our concerns. Many days, I was leaving as the workers arrived. Danny would leave post it notes to ensure the contractors addressed any concerns from the day before. The contractors are very respectful of our home. They cleaned up every afternoon so as not to leave our house in disarray. My fireplace turned out beautifully. My bathroom doors were moved and the new locking barn darns turned out beautifully. Danny is having a custom threshold designed to make the transition between too rooms seamless. Danny took a load barring wall down to open up the kitchen and the back room. Danny ensured the openings to these rooms were at least 36 inches. Ensuring the house is ADA accessible was very important to me.

Our project coordinator on site was Alberto. He was so fastidious, and was so committed to making the job look fantastic at the end. He even came back after he realized he forgot to put some thing on our final cabinet installation even thought he was in his truck, on his way out. He was just so excellent and we can’t have asked for a better project result.

My wife and I reached out to Integrity Home Pro for a quote to repair/replace wood under our bay windows that started rotting years ago. Within a few days, we had an estimate with several different options, and reasonable price set for the work done, as well as an estimate for how long the work would take.Within 3 weeks, Integrity Home Pro sent out their team to replace our rotted wood with panels and had finished the work within the time originally estimated. We're so happy with the work they've done, that we will certainly be reaching out again for more work on our home.Long and short: Integrity Home Pro has shown us professional courtesy, impressive workmanship, and genuine care for our needs. The quality of service is a rarity, and we plan on reaching out to Integrity again in the near future.Photos provided to show the before and after

Integrity Home Pro was a pleasure to work with. I had extensive hail damage to my house and the process of getting information to my insurance and approval for a full replacement was a long process. Ben at Integrity was very patient and extremely helpful every step of the way. He assisted with everything the insurance needed so that now I have a new roof and siding. The installers were outstanding and when they were finished you could not see any debris on the lawn or damage to any bushes. I used Integrity about 10 years ago for the previous roof that the hail damaged ( I thought they were terrific then) and I think they only have improved with time. I highly recommend them!

Integrity Home Pro were very pleasant and easy to work with when our roof was damaged by a tree branch. They replaced my roof quickly in the morning. Also, I am a returning customer knowing they did a great job replacing my roof 20 years ago.

Integrity Home-Pro just completed remolding our kitchen. The process took two weeks. Elmer Lopez did the work. He worked non-stop everyday; his workmanship is premium. Tera Ingwersen guided us through the process from the office on a regular basis and was always available to answer questions. Integrity's quote for the work was significantly less than a quote given by another company. Integrity's owner, Danny Peterson, personally came when we called about getting a quote. He followed up on two occasions as the work was being done. Integrity Home Pro has done other major projects on our home and we have been pleased each time.
