5 Common Siding Problems to be Aware of

Sunday, September 21st, 2014 by Danny Peterson

Siding not only protects your home, it is a source of aesthetic appeal. The overall look and condition of the siding can impact the home’s value. Some common siding problems occur due to weathering and aging, while others may be the result of improper installation. Identifying and resolving these issues in a timely manner can help you to maintain the integrity of your siding and your home. Replacing some or all of the siding may be necessary to remedy these problems.

1. Warping or Buckling

If your home has wood siding, it should be tightly affixed to the home’s exterior. Vinyl siding is not constructed the same way, however. Rather than adhering tightly to the home, it should be hung from fasteners which allow for slight movement as well as expansion and contraction with changing temperatures. If the vinyl pieces are attached too tightly, this can result in warping or buckling as they try to expand and contract. Homeowners can check for flexibility by trying to gently move a piece of siding with their hand. It should give slightly in each direction.

2. Fading

Over time, exposure to direct sunlight can cause siding to fade. The ultraviolet light can lead to discoloration in some spots. Areas where the sun is blocked or does not have prolonged exposure may maintain proper coloring for longer periods of time. Discoloration due to the sun can result in an inconsistent look across the exterior of the home. This is more of a cosmetic problem but can detract from the value and appeal. If not addressed, it can also lead to more extensive damage such as cracking.

3. Cracking

Cracks in the siding can be caused by several different factors. One may be that something damaged the siding such as a jagged tree branch, rocks thrown up from a lawn mower, or another form of impact. If wood siding is not properly treated and maintained, exposure to the weather can result in cracking as the wood goes from wet to dry and expands and contracts. Vinyl siding may crack due to prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. If not repaired, cracks can allow moisture to penetrate the structure of the home and cause more serious concern.

4. Moisture Problems

Before vinyl siding is installed, a waterproof barrier should be placed over the exterior of the home. This will seal out moisture. Because vinyl siding needs room to expand and contract, it does not provide a watertight seal and this layer is necessary. Wood siding is affixed tightly to the home to create a shield against moisture. If moisture is trapped against the exterior of the home it can lead to rotting, mildew, and other damage both internally and externally. If areas of siding are blocked from receiving sunlight, they may develop mold or algae buildup because moisture is not as quickly dried.

5. Noisy Siding

Improperly installed siding can create disturbing noises as temperatures change or when it is windy. If vinyl siding is too tight, it does not have enough room to expand and contract and homeowners may hear creaking and popping. If fasteners are not placed properly, it could result in more rattling of the siding in the wind as well. If homeowners notice any of these issues or other changes in their siding, it is important to contact a professional company such as Integrity Home Pro to have their siding evaluated. This will help them to determine the root cause of the problem and how to proceed. Ensuring proper installation of siding can help to reduce issues, as can regular care and maintenance. This will help to identify and address problems before they become more serious. Image credit: Flickr.com
