How to Declutter Your Garage: Easy Organization Tips for Homeowners

May 13, 2026

Do you park your car outside in the driveway—not necessarily because you want to, but because there’s nowhere else to put it?

Is walking through your garage a little bit like maneuvering through some ancient labyrinth or obstacle course?

Many homeowners have messy garages, and can live with them for years. Then one day they just get fed up. They realize that they’ve got a perfectly good room that they’re not really using to its full potential. They realize that, if they ever want to sell the house, they’re going to need to thoroughly clean out that garage. They realize just how close they are to being on the show Hoarders!

If that’s you—if you’ve gotten the itch to clean and declutter your messy garage—then you’ve come to the right place. We’ve got some useful tips listed below, which will assist you in organizing that garage and getting rid of the stuff you just don’t need anymore.

Making the Best Use of Your Space

You’re going to want to tackle this project on a reasonably warm, dry day. Your first step is just to move everything out. Move all your boxes and shelves into the driveway or the yard. Yes, this is going to take some time, but it’s important to begin with an empty space—a blank canvas, as it were.

Once you’ve cleaned everything out and you’re staring at an empty space, ask yourself: How do you really want to use the garage? What are your goals for the room? Visualize what you want to do with the garage, whether it’s parking your vehicles, storing lawn and garden equipment, or even using it to practice the guitar or do arts and crafts!

Then, get out some masking tape. Place strips of tape on the floor to map out the different zones of the room—where you want to put the lawnmower, or where you want to place a table, and so on. Make sure your plan is really practical before you proceed.

Sorting Your Stuff

Next comes the really hard part: Sorting through your stuff. To do this, we recommend creating three general piles: Keep, donate, and trash. Everything you have in the garage then needs to go into one of those piles.

As you go over each item, be honest with yourself. Do you actually need it? When’s the last time you used it? Can you replace it inexpensively, should you ever need to? And do you truly have the space for it? Be candid with yourself, and don’t hold onto things just because.

Stack It

Next, move all of your “keep” stuff back into the garage. Stack things vertically—and remember that the stuff you use infrequently can go up top. This is especially true of Christmas decorations, which you really only need to access once a year or so.

Meanwhile, stuff that you use all the time should be made more accessible, perhaps hung from the wall in an easy to reach spot. Garden tools, camping and sports supplies—these are the sorts of things that might fall into this category.

Make it Come Alive

A final thought: Once you’ve taken all this time to organize and declutter your garage, you might as well go one step further and really give the room a sense of style. Why not paint the walls, or even the floor? You don’t necessarily need to make the garage feel like a second living room, but do make it a more appealing place. By doing so, you might reduce the risk of getting it overly cluttered again!
