What’s a Home Energy Audit?

Wednesday, October 25th, 2017 by Danny Peterson

These days, it is very important to make sure your home is energy efficient, which is the primary purpose of a home energy audit. Professional energy assessments generally go into great detail to assess your home’s energy use. In the process, an energy auditor will do a room-by-room examination of the residence, and even consider past utility bills. Many professional energy assessments will also include a blower door test and a thermographic scan.

In order to prepare for a home energy audit, it will be necessary to make a list of any existing problems such as condensation, and uncomfortable or drafty rooms. Have copies or a summary of the home’s yearly energy bills. An auditor will use this information to establish what to look for during the audit.

When the auditor arrives, they will first examine the outside of the home and its features such as the wall area, and the number and size of your windows. Then, the auditor will analyze your behavior. They will want to know how many people live in the home, if every room is in use, and what the average thermostat setting is during summer and winter months. Be sure to walk through your home with the auditor as they work and ask questions. They may also use equipment to detect sources of energy loss. All of this information will be provided to you in a detailed report with suggestions on how to improve your energy usage.
